She walked over to the side of the counter and waited for him to turn and face her. He simply continued with his task and acted as though she wasn't there. She finally leaned in to whisper in his ear.
"If you are nervous I understand." She said in a soft voice. "If you don't want me to assist you, simply turn and look at me. You don't have to say a word, you just look at me and I will leave yoube. However, If you do want me to help you, just continue to stock these shelves as say nothing."
The man paused what he was doing, hung his head an took a deep breath as though deep in thought. he then looked up at the wall, paused for a second more, and continued to stock the shelves. But then before she could walk away, he finally responded to her with something strange.
"I don't know who you are. And I don't want to see you hurt. I appreciate your consideration and would love to guide you to your next destination. But I can't. Perhaps you should talk to Sherrif mills about the reasons why I can't respond."
And with that, he finished stocking the shelving unit behind the counter, and started towards the mess on the floor in the back to clean it up.
She realized his fear was what was probably making him act a little strange. After she took a closer look, she noticed there were bruises on the side of the man's face, and his hands were bloody and damaged. He had recently been in a fight.
Scanning the room a little more thoroughly it also showed signs of the fight. Some of the shelves were broken on the other end of the counter, and many of the items were on the floor. It seems as though the scuffle was recent, though some of the bruises were old. This man has been through a lot recently. Someone has been muscling him.
"Has someone been hurting you Sir? You look frightened and I am here today to confront the Gentries about what they did to my Father. Is there anything you can do to help me with this task. Maybe help you a bit in the process as well?"
The man said nothing and just turned around and continued to stock the shelves. His body language spoke volumes though. This store clerk was simply trying to run a business and it was apparent that he didn't want to face the troubles he had recently dealt with.
